Dealing with a home’s thermostat is pretty simple, except when you have thermostat problems. The reason I say this is because when you thermostat is not working properly, then everything else will function differently as well. Something that you need to understand is that thermostat problems are not hard to figure out and if you can figure them out, you can easily fix them without having to pay somebody else to do it.
One of the problems that is more a problem for the user is they don’t know how a thermostat actually works. What you need to know is that a thermostat is used to regulate the temperature of a room and therefore you need it to be precise. One of the ways a digital thermostat works is by taking the information from the receptor and converting that information into a digital readout. Most new thermostats are digital but if you have an older one then it uses mercury instead of a receptor. Mercury works really well but because of the danger level that mercury provides, all new thermostats are switched over to using receptors now. Now, depending on what type of thermostat you have, you will have different problems and that is what I want to address.
Most Common Thermostat Problems
Dirt and Dust – If you have a thermostat that has been there for many years you might have a lot of dirt, dust and spider-webs inside the housing. All you need to do is take a soft brush and clean all the moving parts so that they can move freely like they should be able to do. When there is a lot of dirt or dust inside the thermostat, it will change the temperature reading a little bit which can cause your entire system to be thrown off.
Bad Placement – Where is your thermostat placed? One of the biggest thermostat problems that people have is they place their thermostat in a bad spot. What I mean by this is you should never place your thermostat on an outside wall, near an air conditioning unit or in direct sunlight because that will change the temperature of the housing where the thermostat is actually at. When your thermostat is in the direct sunlight, then it will think that it is hotter than it actually is and this will cause your heating and cooling system to over work when it really shouldn’t. what you need to understand is this is one of the biggest thermostat problems that people have.
Old Model – If you have an older model mercury thermostat, then it is about time that you upgrade to a digital thermostat. The reason why mercury thermostats have problems is because they don’t help you save energy and they kick the heating and cooling system on whenever it feels like it. What I recommend is that you get a digital thermostat because then you will be able to set it to run only when you are awake or inside the house.
These are the three most common thermostat problems that people face and that is why I wanted to make sure you understand them better. Being that a thermostat is not a very sophisticated piece of equipment, it will not take long for you to figure out how they work. One thing I highly recommend is that if you are not sure about what is wrong with your thermostat, then you need to get somebody that knows more about them than you do or else you run the risk or breaking it.
Tips On Avoiding Thermostat Problems
Frequent Checks – One of the things that you can do to avoid thermostat problems is to run frequent checks to see how things are working. Most people forget to do this and that is why they run into problems when they are least expecting it. What I suggest is that you check your thermostat at least every 2 months to make sure that it is clean and working like it should.
Upgrade When Necessary – Something that most people try not to do is upgrade their thermostat. The reason people don’t like to do this is because it costs money every time they do it. What I would recommend is that you upgrade your thermostat every 2 years because in that time there will be a lot of new ones that come out and you need to take advantage of these newer systems while you can.
As you can see, there are certain things that you need to watch out for so that you don’t have thermostat problems all the time. One final thing that I want you to consider is that not every thermostat is going to have problems and as long as you check it regularly, then you should not have to worry about it breaking down on you.
